Chaffetz: Where are the #Benghazi survivors??

Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R- UT) told Breitbart News on Wednesday that he has been “thwarted” by the State Department from seeing any Americans who survived the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in  Benghazi. Many people forget that there were Americans who survived the Benghazi attack, some of whom were badly injured and are still recovering.

“My understanding is that we still have some people in the hospital. I’d like to visit with them and wish them nothing but the best but the State Department has seen it unfit for me to know who those people are — or even how many there are,” Rep. Chaffetz said. “I don’t know who they are. I don’t know where they live. I don’t know what state they’re from. I don’t even know how many there are. It doesn’t seem right to me.”

“This is so patently different than any other experience I’ve had. … My challenge is to the media. You try and figure it out. They won’t let Congress know. They won’t seem to let the media know either.”

Hundreds of thousands turn out to see Pakistan’s rising son – Asia – World – The Independent

Five years after the assassination of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, her son and political heir has outlined his vision for the country in a speech his supporters claimed marked the launch of his own career in politics. Critics said it underscored the enduring presence of dynastic politics, more than 65 years after the creation of Pakistan.

More than 200,000 party workers and supporters gathered at the Bhutto family mausoleum near Larkana in the southern Pakistani province of Sindh to hear 24-year-old Bilawal Bhutto Zardari deliver his first major political address. Security was reportedly very tight and more than 15,000 police were on duty as the Oxford University graduate and other leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) addressed the crowds, and paid emotional tributes to the late Ms Bhutto.

“Benazir sacrificed her life to uphold democracy,” Mr Bhutto Zardari said of his mother, who was killed five years ago in Rawalpindi while campaigning ahead of parliamentary elections. “The beacon of democracy continues to shine.”

Within days of the 27 December 2007 killing of Ms Bhutto, who twice served as the nation’s premier, her son was appointed co-chairman of the PPP, along with her widower, Asif Ali Zardari, who became President.

At the time of his mother’s assassination by the Taliban, Mr Bhutto Zardari was aged just 19 and for several years he kept a low profile. But the late premier’s supporters have always wanted to push the young man to take on more responsibility within the party, even though he cannot stand for election until his 25th birthday in September next year. Earlier this year, he accused Pervez Musharraf of “murdering” his mother by sabotaging her security – an allegation the former military ruler has denied.

The desire to utilise the Bhutto name – his grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto served as President and Prime Minister – is all the greater given the unpopularity of Mr Zardari and that elections are scheduled to be held in the spring. Mr Zardari, who has repeatedly been forced to deny allegations of corruption, is prohibited from leading his party’s campaign. “This is his political career’s first public meeting,” Mr Bhutto Zardari’s spokesman, Aijaz Durrani, told AFP. “A new Bhutto is emerging today in the shape of Bilawal who has vision of his mother and grandfather, and people are excited.”

The party’s intention to capitalise on the Bhutto legacy was underscored by Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf. In a statement, he said: “Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, following in the tradition of generations, will prove to be an important turning point for democracy and politics.”

Dynastic politics remains pervasive in many parts of south Asia, and in Pakistan, there is no more powerful dynasty than the Bhutto family. Rasul Baksh Rais, a political analyst, said Mr Bhutto Zardari’s political blooding had long been anticipated. “Politics is dominated by influential political families who build coalitions to hold power,” he said. “There’s no ideology, no questions about past allegiances or support for the military. It’s a pragmatic approach.”

Raza Rumi, a writer and analyst with the Jinnah Institute, said Mr Bhutto Zardari’s “foray into politics” is “an opportunity for the party to connect with the younger Pakistanis who now comprise majority of the population”.

Statement approved by President Bush 41 about the death of General Schwarzkopf, Jr. « Gretawire

HOUSTON — Following is a statement approved by President Bush, who remains in the intensive care unit at Methodist Hospital, on the passing of General Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr.

“Barbara and I mourn the loss of a true American patriot and one of the great military leaders of his generation. A distinguished member of that Long Gray Line hailing from West Point, General Norm Schwarzkopf, to me, epitomized the ‘duty, service, country’ creed that has defended our freedom and seen this great Nation through our most trying international crises. More than that, he was a good and decent man — and a dear friend. Barbara and I send our condolences to his wife Brenda and his wonderful family.”

Boehner ‘Not Interested’ in Bill That Most of GOP Would Reject : Roll Call News

“The House has acted on two bills that collectively would avert the entire fiscal cliff. We passed HR 8 at the beginning of August to stop all of the tax rate increases that are set to occur on Jan. 1 under current law. And we’ve passed legislation to replace the entire sequester with responsible spending cuts,” Boehner said according to a source on the call. “These bills await action by the Senate. And as I, Eric, Kevin and Cathy said yesterday in a joint statement: If the Senate will not approve these bills and send them to the president to be signed into law in their current form, they must be amended and returned to the House. Once this has occurred, the House will then consider whether to accept the bills as amended, or to send them back to the Senate with additional amendments. The House will take this action on whatever the Senate can pass — but the Senate must act.”

Benghazi penalties are bogus

By JOSH MARGOLIN

Last Updated: 1:46 AM, December 26, 2012

The four officials supposedly out of jobs because of their blunders in the run-up to the deadly Benghazi terror attack remain on the State Department payroll — and will all be back to work soon, The Post has learned.

The highest-ranking official caught up in the scandal, Assistant Secretary of State Eric Boswell, has not “resigned” from government service, as officials said last week. He is just switching desks. And the other three are simply on administrative leave and are expected back.

The four were made out to be sacrificial lambs in the wake of a scathing report issued last week that found that the US compound in Benghazi, Libya, was left vulnerable to attack because of “grossly inadequate” security.

State Department leaders “didn’t come clean about Benghazi and now they’re not coming clean about these staff changes,” a source close to the situation told The Post., adding, the “public would be outraged over this.”

US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the Sept. 11 attack, originally blamed on a spontaneous demonstration against a US-made anti-Islam video that got out of hand.

That version was dismissed by an Accountability Review Board headed by retired Ambassador Thomas Pickering.

In response to questions from The Post, the State Department would only reissue the carefully crafted statement put out last week.

Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton “has accepted Eric Boswell’s decision to resign as assistant secretary for diplomatic security, effective immediately.” What Nuland omitted was that Boswell gave up only the presidential appointment as assistant secretary, not his other portfolios.

The other officials — Deputy Assistant Secretaries Charlene Lamb and Raymond Maxwell, and a third who has not been identified — were found to have shown “performance inadequacies” but not “willful misconduct,” Pickering said, so they would not face discipline.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) told The Post this is “yet another ruse about the tragedy of Benghazi.”

“State Department officials proclaimed . . . that heads would roll . . . Now we see that the discipline is a lie and all that has happened is the shuffling of the deck chairs.”

Glenn Beck: Obama destined for prison?

As many news sites and pundits break down the biggest stories of 2012, one story too big to miss has been resurrected by the website TeaParty.org, a story at least one national pundit believes could send Barack Obama to prison.

The tea-party site posted a Glenn Beck video from October in which the TV and radio host insisted a case for treason could be built against President Obama for his role in the attack of Sept. 11, 2012, in which armed Libyans captured and killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three others at an American diplomatic mission in Benghazi.

“This president is lying to you about Benghazi in such spectacular fashion that I believe people will go to prison,” Beck said on the Blaze TV broadcast of his radio show. “This is impeachable; the president might go to prison for this one.”

Beck cited evidence that Ambassador Stevens had been helping arm Arab Spring rebels in Libya and Syria, rebel forces that included al-Qaida operatives and a heavy Muslim Brotherhood influence.

Yet when those same forces turned on the diplomatic mission and overran it, killing Ambassador Stevens, the Obama administration initially suggested it could have been the result instead of mass, popular protests run amuck over a YouTube video critical of Islam’s prophet, Muhammad.

Despite evidence the attacking forces on Sept. 11 were organized and heavily armed, and later evidence the “popular uprisings” were non-existent, the White House was reluctant to attribute the attacks to terrorism.

In the Blaze TV video, Beck proposed a reason for the misinformation from Washington.

“Can you imagine a scandal, if it were to come out, that Obama supplied the terrorists, our enemies, with weapons to attack and kill our own embassy and ambassador?” Beck asked.

“This is why the White House covered, because our ambassador was killed by a guy we were running guns to and we are still running guns today,” Beck said. “Russia Today is verifying that U.S. Stinger missiles are in the hands of the Syrian rebels, the Syrian rebels which are connected to al-Qaida and the Muslim Brotherhood. We also have a report now from the New York Times that we are using the Muslim Brotherhood to arm the rebels in Syria.

“This president is on the wrong side,” Beck concluded. “It is so crystal clear, that at this point you can begin to make a case for treason.”
